Diagnosed with Celiac? Here's What to Do in the First 7 Days

After three long years and visits to various doctors, we finally had an answer: celiac disease. It was such a relief to finally put a name to the vague, persistent symptoms my daughter had experienced for so long. For years, doctors dismissed my concerns and some even made me feel like I was imagining things. But I knew something wasn’t right, and now we had clarity.
Even with my background in nutrition and experience working with gluten-sensitive clients, navigating this diagnosis with my own child was a completely different experience. I didn’t know where to begin. If you're feeling the same way, the following will help you through the first 7 days.
Day 1 - Do Nothing. Let the Celiac Diagnosis Sink In.
This isn't the time to tear apart your kitchen, toss all your food, or cancel upcoming plans. You get the idea. Reacting impulsively can lead to choices you might regret. Give yourself a moment to breathe first.
Days 2-3 - Get to work. Research!
Take the next 2 days to begin learning about celiac disease - what it is, how it works, and how it differs from non-celiac gluten sensitivity. This knowledge will form the foundation for everything that comes next.
Be mindful of where you get your information. While Facebook groups and online forums can offer support, they’re often filled with conflicting or inaccurate advice. Stick to credible, evidence based sources like Beyond Celiac, the National Celiac Association, and the Celiac Disease Foundation.
Days 4-5 - Begin Your Kitchen Overhaul
Over the next couple of days, you will begin your kitchen overhaul. Start by deciding whether your kitchen will be 100 percent gluten-free or shared, keeping your family and lifestyle in mind.
Then go through your food, check labels, and separate or discard gluten-containing items if you are going fully gluten-free. As you sort, clean all surfaces and appliances to eliminate any lingering crumbs. A clean, organized space is the first step toward a safe gluten-free kitchen.
Days 6-7 - Supermarket Trip
The first trip to the supermarket after a celiac diagnosis or non-celiac gluten sensitivity can feel overwhelming. Reading labels is a new skill and can be confusing at first. To make it easier, focus on naturally gluten-free foods such as fresh meat, poultry, fruits, vegetables, and most dairy products. Don’t worry about finding gluten-free versions of your favorite foods right away. Start simple and build from there.
Give Yourself Permission to Grieve
Feeling overwhelmed is completely normal and healthy in this situation. I’ve been there myself, and the diagnosis felt all-consuming. But over time, my kitchen became safe again, grocery shopping got easier, and the same will happen for you. Remember to be patient and take it one day at a time.
